Emily Bootle

The number of Kamloops players on next year’s edition of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s Volleyball team will be up to two. Outside hitter Amanda Frayne (Sa-hali Secondary) will be going into her third year with the club. Now, she’ll be joined by freshman middle/right side Emily Bootle (South Kamloops). Bootle has signed a letter of intent to join the WolfPack in the Fall of 2009, enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

“She has a lot of upside,” said WolfPack head coach Cal Wohlford of his second recruit of 2009. “She’s very tall. Its great that we can get another hometown girl to commit to our program. It shows Kamloops players that they have a chance to play with our program.”

Bootle is 6’2” and has been playing volleyball since grade six. “I’m very proud to be the second local player on the team,” she says “I’m hoping that over the next couple of years I can be able to work up to the incredible standards Amanda has put in place.”

She was part of a South Kam Titan team which was in a rebuilding mode. The club featured two grade 10 players. Bootle felt it was a good chance for her to work on her leadership skills in helping mentor those players.

Bootle believes that her height at the net, putting up high blocks and attacking are her main strengths. “Next year, as a building year for myself, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to bring a positive attitude and strong support to the team, in practices and whether or not I see the floor in games.”

Wohlford believes that attitude will help her in the long run. “I know she is excited to be with us. We’ll put her on a training program right away so she’ll be ready for next season.”

“TRU has always been my first choice for my first University,” Bootle explains .“Cal approached me towards the end of my season this year for volleyball. After spending some time watching them in practice during the holiday season, my mind was made up that I wanted to be here. It was a great chance to meet the girls and hopefully make the transition to the CIS.”

Bootle knows it’ll be a step up from High School. “As a new player to the team and the school I’m content being worked into the line up. It’ll give me a chance to adapt to the team dynamic and get my skills to a level where I’ll be contributing equally to the effort in games. Joining any higher calibre team will bring more pressure with it. And the home crowd will probably tap my nerves, but all of that will give me more motivation to play my best.”

She will play Club Volleyball in Kamloops this spring under WolfPack Assistant Coach Ashley Shannik.

Bootle joins Elise Foot (Prince George, BC) as the first two recruits to sign with the WolfPack program for 2009. Wohlford plans to make at least two more signings before the start of next season.
