Turnovers will make or break a basketball game. The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s basketball team learned that lesson the hard way again tonite in Saskatoon (Oct 22) in the opening game of the Graham Construction Shootout at the University of Saskatchewan.
The WolfPack came out on the short end of a 102-82 decision to the home town Huskies.
“We played hard at times,’ said TRU head coach Thom GIllespie. “There were moments where we looked pretty good but when you turn over the ball 26 times, it is very difficult to win.”
The WolfPack trailed by six after the first quarter (27-21) and were down by four at the half (47-43). But the third quarter is where the tide really turned in the direction of the Huskies.
“We got it down under 10 in the fourth quarter, ” Gillespie explained “Unfortunately, we turned the ball over again and again and we were down by 19 when they gained the next four possessions. We really didn’t have a good game flow going and Saskatchewan took advantage of breakdowns in our transition.”
Greg Stewart (4th year, forward, Kamloops, BC), Drew Bleth (5 th year, guard, Ridgeview, Wash) and Charles Barton (2nd year, forward, Vernon, BC) led the way for TRU with 14 points a piece.
Showron Glover (4th year, guard, Fresno,Calif) had 31 points for Saskatchewan. Michael Linklater (5 th year, Saskatoon, Sask) contributed 26 for a team which shot 100 per cent from the free throw line (13 for 13).
The WolfPack see their pre season record dip to 2 and 3. They continue the tournament on Friday (Oct 23) against McGill Redmen. Tip off is 5:30 pm CST.
“We have to concentrate on WolfPack basketball,” Gillespie said. “Reducing turnovers is a key and playing tougher defense. It is what we will face when we play the University of Fraser Valley next week in our season opener.”
