WOLFPACK HOCKEY BEATS SFU IN FIRST OF TWO February 7, 2010

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack scored three times in the second period and withstood a late surge from Simon Fraser University to beat them 8-6 in BC Intercollegiate Hockey League action Saturday night (Feb 6) at Memorial Arena.
A crowd of 1,450 people were on hand to see the top two teams in the BCIHL go head to to head for the first of a two game weekend series.
“It was a great game tonite,” said WolfPack head coach Chris Hans “ We had balanced scoring.”
Hans thought a second period fight involving assistant captain Korey Gannon (3rd year, defence, Kamloops, BC) was the turning point for his team.
The WolfPack outshot SFU 32-27 in the contest. The teams were tied at 2 after the first period. TRU was up 6-3 after two periods.
The WolfPack got goals from eight different scorers. Kevin Hanna (1st year, forward, Cloverdale, BC) got a goal and one assist in his debut with the ‘Pack. He joined the team last week from the Alberta College Athletic Association. Other scorers were Jassi Sangha (1st year, forward, Kamloops, BC), Joel Leonard (3rd year, forward, Kamloops, BC), Jose Reyes (1st year, forward, Kamloops, BC), Cody Lockwood (3rd year, defence, Kamloops, BC), Dyne Parker (1st year, forward, Rossland, BC) and Casey Patterson (1st year, forward, Chase, BC). Lockwood’s goal was scored on the power play. Patterson’s came short handed.
SFU was led by Paul Moscone (3rd year, Burnaby, BC) with a goal and four assists. Jas Rai ( 2nd year, forward, Surrey, BC) had a hat trick for the league leaders, who’s record fell to 15-3-2 on the year. The other SFU goals came from Jackson Friesen (2nd year forward, South Delta, BC) and Sam Kobe (1st year forward, Parksville, BC). SFU scored three straight goals in the third period to make the game close.
Justin Mulholland (1st year, Coquitlam, BC) was in nets for SFU. Blake Tancock (1st year, Chilliwack, BC) was the winning goalie for TRU, who’s record jumps to 11 and 6. The ‘Pack are 10 points behind front running SFU in the standings. TRU does have three games in hand.
“SFU is a very strong team and made things close in the end,” Hans added. “ But I’m very happy with our effort tonite.”
The two teams play again Sunday at Noon at Memorial Arena.
