Jennifer Knopp had the goal for the Heat
The Kamloops Heat opened up their 2010 Pacific Coast Soccer League women’s reserve season with a loss. Playing at Hillside Stadium on Saturday (May 1), the Heat fell 2-1 to the visiting Chilliwack Football Club.
Chilliwack led 1-0 at the half and led 2-0 before the Heat got a free kick goal in the 88 th minute from Jen Knopp. Knopp, a native of Vernon, BC red shirted for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack last season.
“We played well at times, but I was disappointed overall,”said Heat coach Tom McManus, who is also the head man of the TRU program and KamloopsYouth Soccer. “ We had six good scoring chances in the first half alone but we couldn’t capitalize. They played physical and dominated.”
The Heat had a chance to tie the match 1-1 in the 44 th minute. Blair MacKay (Kamloops, BC/TRU) had a penalty kick. Unfortunately for Kamloops, the Chilliwack goalie smothered it.
“It we would have had that one, it would have changed the momentum of the match,” McManus said.
Christine Tallon, who spent 2009-10 attending the University of Alberta was in the nets for the Heat.
“We were still getting to know each other,” added McManus who noted that some of his players were still coming into town as late as this morning. “ I was disappointed that things we worked on the last two months in training weren’t executed.”
The Heat hit the road next weekend (May 8-9) for matches in Richmond on Saturday and against the TSS Academy at Van College on Sunday.
15 members of the TRU WolfPack are playing for the Heat this season. McManus is joined in the coaching area by TRU assistants Kelly Shantz and Glen Archer. The Manager again this year is David Lloyd.
